We’ve been alluding to an upcoming announcement for a while now, and we’re excited to make it official.  Delinquent Theatre’s first presents of 2012 is Anton Lipovetsky’s FLOP!  We are so excited to be presenting Anton’s tour-de-force musical at Studio 1398 on Granville Island this March.  Coming to us after a sold-out run at the Edmonton Fringe festival, FLOP! is simply one of the most exciting and engaging pieces of new theatre we’ve seen in a while, and we’re so glad to be presenting it to Vancouver audiences.  Talented Studio 58 grad Anton is joined by our Delinquent friend and UBC grad Mishelle Cuttler on piano accompaniment.

It’s gonna be a happy New Year!

We began 2011 with a production of my play Our Time at the Dorothy Somerset Studio, with help from Theatre at UBC.  In May and June, we joined the wonderful artists at ITSAZOO Productions  and Enlightenment Theatre to do Bridge Mix, where we made lots of new friends and created PARKED: an indie rock musical for novelty instruments.  In September, Laura directed Oh My God as part of the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, and we had a blast meeting artists from all over Canada and delighting audiences with our brand new script by Josephine Mitchell.  In October, November and December we took part in the Here Be Monsters Festival in the Theatre Under the Gun nights, and made a demo of our musical to send out in hopes of debuting a full-length version of PARKED next year.

3:00PM: After one last chance to run it, it’s time to go to Performance Works and tech the show!

7:15PM: We are backstage and ready to rock. Here’s what the boys have to say…

11:00PM: We did it!

11:00AM: We meet again. Coffee is brewed, ideas are steeped, and we are ready to begin again.

12:12AM: We’ve now had 4 pots of coffee and things are really coming along. We’re talking folklore, Old English torture, art, and… umm… some colorful content from David.

1:52PM: Lunch time. Thanks Uncle Fatihs!

4:35PM: We are breaking for dinner/quiet time/going to work (who works during TUG?!). Power break and then back at 9:30.

1:32AM: it’s half lunacy and half brilliance here. Live from the Delinquent lab….

3:13AM: The show is written and staged. What we need now is sleep and the ability to remember it all tomorrow. We end with a group photo, which reveals the state of affairs:

2:30PM: Claire and David receive our prop from another group:

8:30PM: We are hunkered down at Delinquent Central taking revolution and change. Our supplies? Coffee, the Communist Manifesto, Halloween candy, and a ukulele.

10:41PM: Discussion has turned to ghost stories, mystery and murder. We are very intrigued by the man in the painting.

Today, and for the next two days we will be posting blogs, videos, and sneak peeks as we put together Delinquent Theatre’s entry into Theatre Under the Gun (TUG) as part of the Here Be Monsters Festival.  Watch this space for updates on our progress as we create a brand new piece of theatre to premiere on the Performance Works stage on Friday, October 28th!

The journey begins today at 2PM, where Delinquent delegates Claire, Dave, and Laura will meet up with the Here Be Monsters head honchos and the other teams to receive our inspiration package.  Also exciting?  Each group has been told to bring a wrapped or concealed prop with them to give to another group.  What will we receive?

After the meeting, Laura will relay this information to the rest of the Delinquent team.  We have decided to take 6 hours for us to reflect on the inspiration materials individually, and to bring in whatever props, costumes, music, text, or whatever else we find when we meet at 8PM at the Delinquent lab (which may or may not be just a garage….)

Karina and Sarah celebrate a sold out show!

Last night, Delinquent Theatre fans and new friends packed Carousel Theatre’s studio stage to the rafters, and the OMG crew celebrated their first sold out show! In a festival of 98 fantastic shows, it can be hard to find an audience, but the word is out about Oh My God. We’ve had a fantastic time so far being inspired by the fabulous shows we’ve seen, and making new friends from all over Canada! From Fringe’s fabulous volunteers to the amazing folks who take time off work to see as many shows as possible, the Fringe spirit is pumping on Granville Island.

The word is out! Oh My God is a hit. Buy your tickets early online at www.vancouverfringe.com or in person at the Fringe Box Office, or get to the show Box Office 45 minutes before the show. 

The Fringe Festival is upon  us!  The first four days have seen the Delinquent gang hard at work making new friends, seeing some exciting theatre, hanging out at the Fringe bar, and of course delighting audiences with Oh My God!  We’ve even had our first review – here’s what Kyira Korrigan from Plank Magazine had to say…

This play was simple, and simply superb. The actors (Karina Palmitesta and Sarah ‘Tich’ Wilson) and direction were both spot-on; the writing of Josephine Mitchell is genuine and rich without any sense of effort.  I recognized these girls, even though I’d never been them, because the few hours shown in their life were real – the story had heart. And, genuine heart, shared in well-crafted live theatre, is never boring. When a playwright, actors and all the people behind the scenes create a show which is true in the way this one is, it is a delight to do our part of being the audience.

Thanks, Plank!
