What other time of year does one get to see dozens of new works, see plays in coffee shops, docks, trees and fire escapes, and party nightly with dozens of national and international theatre artists all in the space of two weeks?  That’s right, Delinquents.  It’s Fringe Festival time!

Fresh from the success of Parked: An Indie Rock Musical for Novelty Instruments, the Delinquent team is about to head back to the rehearsal hall for Oh My God, an original play by Josephine Mitchell.  Starring Delinquent Theatre veteran Tich Wilson (Spring Awakening) and new friend Karina Palmitesta, the cast of OMG is fearlessly led by Delinquent AD Laura McLean.  We’ll have more info to come in the weeks leading up to the Fringe Festival, but consider this your warning.  Fringe is coming, and you’d better be ready!  Bone up on the dozens of other fantastic shows taking Granville Island by storm, and check out our fellow BYOV friends who are taking over Carousel Theatre with us at http://www.vancouverfringe.com.

We hope you’re having a great summer and enjoying the… uh… lovely weather we’ve been having.  While Delinquent Theatre gears up for Oh My God (our entry in the 2011 Vancouver International Fringe Festival), Delinquent Laura McLean has been hard at work with another company, the House Party Collective, putting up Party This Weekend.

It’s an interactive, site specific theatre experience unlike any that’s been seen in Vancouver – become a guest at a party and follow one of four main party guests through a drama-filled, booze-fueled evening of revelations, fights, and even an acoustic guitar performance.  Head over the Party This Weekend website for more info and book soon, shows are already selling out!

The first week of Bridge Mix has come and gone, and the Delinquent crew is having a blast!  It’s been a privilege to enjoy the work of the 9 other talented companies involved (Enlightenment Theatre, Spectral Theatre, TigerMilk Collective, Slam Ink, 411, Monster Creative, ITSAZOO Productions, and Genus Theatre).  We’d especially like to thank presenting companies ITSAZOO and Enlightenment for welcoming us to the Bridge Mix crew – our cast consists mostly of recent UBC Grads and we are so grateful for the chance to play with the big kids.  We’ve made lots of new friends, seen some great theatre, and enjoyed many a roof-top party!  The good news is that there’s still two weeks left to join the fun.

Audience members have loved Bridge Mix, and they seem to especially love Parked: An Indie Rock Musical with Novelty Instruments.  Mark Robins of GayVancouver.net hails Bridge Mix as “satisfying treat of unique site-specific theatre”, and says of Delinquent’s piece, which he names as a highlight of the evening, “they are right, some things are better with a ukulele”.  The Georgia Straight’s Colin Thomas says:

This collection of musical numbers begins with a woman rhythmically clinking her keys and singing, “Where is my fucking car?” The women in this ensemble are especially strong singers. Talent! Yay! And the lyrics are often clever. At one point, a lovesick young office worker warbles, “He’s in distribution/I’m in incoming/I file away my feelings when I see him.’ ”

Playoffs be damned, Bridge Mix opens TONIGHT at the Metro Parkade!

After a ninja-quick tech day, Bridge Mix is up and ready to rock, and Delinquent’s piece Parked: An Indie Rock Musical with Novelty Instruments has been well received thus far!  It’s been a thrill taking our music from musical director Mishelle Cuttler’s living room to the parking garage.  We’re having a blast, and we hope you will join us!  Here’s three more reasons we love Bridge Mix:

1. Roving Bar!  For just $5 you can buy yourself a sweet sweet Phillips beer from the roving bar and quaff as you take in the shows.

2. No-Excuse-Wednesdays – each Wednesday of this run is pay-what-you-can, so you can save your pennies for Kraft Dinner (or Phillips beer)

The Delinquent crew is busy tuning, singing, harmonizing, writing, dancing and strumming as we prepare for Bridge Mix.  Check out the ‘Upcoming’ tab above to see some of our favorite shots from our photo shoot!  Today, we’re happy to introduce the talented singers, actors and musicians that are bringing Parked: An Indie Rock Musical with Novelty Instruments to life.

Meaghan Chenosky: Meaghan is a graduate of UBC’s BFA acting program. Selected theatre credits include: Baroness in  the Madwoman of Chaillot, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet,  Dr. Cantway in The Laramie Project, Lise in Les Belles Soures, Referee in Never Swim Alone, Hermia in A Midsummer Nights Dream, and Amy Lee in Laundry and Bourbon.

Brian Cochrane: Brian grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he started the Skinny Walrus theatre company in 2004. For Skinny Walrus he has directed Rum And Vodka, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, The Last Man On Earth and I’m Number Four, and performed in the first Canadian production of The Four Of Us. Other directing credits include: the Canadian Premiere of Itamar Moses’ Love/Stories at Little Mountain Gallery (Kinetichism); Wild Honey, The Flu Season, and Far Away (all while in residence as an MFA Directing candidate at UBC); and the World Premiere of Charlie & Ella (Llewellyn Productions, Saskatoon). He was assistant director of House/Home, Pi Theatre’s contribution to Hive 3. Brian spent many formative years playing trombone in the band Carbon Dating Service, performing in nine provinces, releasing three albums, twice recording for the CBC and once being chased from a motel in Hamilton. Upcoming: directing Hannah Moscovitch’s East Of Berlin for Saskatoon upstarts Know Theatre.

Ira Cooper: Ira Cooper is flabbergasted by the amount of instruments that he never knew about until this show. He is equally as flabbergasted by the fluid, creative process that went in to make this magical musical romp in a garage, possible. He’d like the thank the creative forces for giving him this wonderful opportunity and the wonderfully talented cast, for being wonderfully talented and wonderfully open people. Ira’s previous work on the stage has included “Diary of A Madman” (Setkani Festival, Czech Republic), “The Laramie Project” (Fighting Chance Production) and “Little Little Little Theatre” (William Miranda Production). He is currently in the midst of rewriting his one man show series to start public performances hopefully in July. See Ira next in “Party This Weekend” directed by Laura McLean. Thank you to the fam, girlfriend and friends as a constant reminder that theatre is based on something besides imagination.

Mishelle Cuttler:  Mishelle is a composer, musical director, actor and musician with a particular affinity for novelty instruments.  She wrote and performed original music for Romeo & Juliet at the Telus Studio Theatre, and was the musical director for A New Brain (Pipedream Theatre), Arms and the Man, and The Laramie Project (Theatre at UBC).  She is currently composing the score for another production of Romeo & Juliet at Pacific Theatre this June.  Acting credits include Marie in Pains of Youth, Sasha in Wild Honey, Dorothy in City of Beaches, and Constance in The Madwoman of Chaillot (Theatre at UBC).  Look for her this July in The Good Woman of Setzuan with Seven Tyrants Theatre, where she will play a Sister-in-Law, a God, and the accordion.

Alexander Keurvorst: This is Alexander’s third production with Delinquent Theatre, and he is THRILLED to return. Previous outings with DT include Spring Awakening and Dog Sees God. Other credits include Mental! The Musical (Studio 16), Les Miserables (PMT), and Summer Brave (UBC). He is going into the intermediate year of the BFA Acting program at UBC this fall. Britt MacLeod: Britt is a graduate of Capilano University’s Musical Theatre program. She is an actor, singer, writer, dancer and choreographer of numerous styles. She is also a songwriter and performs regularly with her ukulele (“Lola”). This summer they will record their first EP together. Favourite recent stage credits include: Into the Woods (Exit 22), Female Transport (Exit 22), Closing Ceremonies 2010 Winter Olympics (dancer), and Nine (Pipedream Productions), and the Canadian premiere of Love/Stories (or: But You Will Get Used To It) with Kinetichism, for which she is also the founding Creative Producer. Next, Britt can be seen in Patrick Street Productions’ The Light In the Piazza which premieres in Vancouver this fall.  Check out her YouTube channel: brittimac.

Christine Quintana: A playwright, actor and singer, Christine recently completed her BFA in Acting at UBC.  Previous writing projects include Transfer, The Semantics of Romantics and Our Time as part of the Ignite Youth Week Festival.  Our Time was remounted in the spring of 2011 at the Dorothy Somerset Studio.  As an actor, Christine has performed in various musicals (Seussical the Musical for Carousel Theatre, Rent for Fighting Chance Productions, High School Musical for Uncle Randy Productions) and plays (The Laramie Project, Romeo and Juliet, The Madwoman of Chaillot, The Madonna Painter and Wild Honey, all for Theatre at UBC).  Christine is the co-artistic director of Delinquent Theatre.
